October 1st: NFIP extended and CRS discounts begin

October 1st: NFIP extended and CRS discounts begin
October 1st Marks NFIP Extension and Marshfield CRS Class Increase
Two major milestones are being marked today:

Congress Passes Continuing Resolution: NFIP extended to September 30, 2021

Last night, Congress passed a Continuing Resolution (CR) to keep the government funded at current levels through December 11th 2020.  However, the CR includes an extension of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) to September 30th, 2021.

The extension provides no change to the current NFIP, no long term reauthorization or reform.  There is no legislative reform expected for the remainder of 2020.

Stay tuned as the MCC continues to updated you on the NFIP
Marshfield CRS class rating increase effective today

Starting today, October 1st in the Town of Marshfield, MA, most NFIP new business policies and renewals in any “A” or “V” zone will include a 15% discount to flood insurance premiums, an increase from the current 5% discount.  Some policies in low risk “C”, “B” and “X” zones will also see the discount.   On November 7th, 2019, FEMA performed a Community Rating System (CRS) audit in the Town of Marshfield, which is done once every five years.  Based on the review, FEMA gave Marshfield a point total of 1797 which was enough to reach Class 7 and resulted in many NFIP policy holders in the Town of Marshfield receiving a 15% discount on their flood insurance.

This makes Marshfield one of only 22 communities in Massachusetts in the CRS program, and one of only 8 towns in the State with the Class 7 designation.  The Town’s Plan for Public Information document is one of only four in New England, including New York State, and is the highest scoring PPI of the four.  The PPI document organizes all of the Town’s outreach activities for flood-related hazards.

The result is a cumulative savings of over $300,000 in flood insurance premiums throughout the Town and a reduction of our overall flood risk.   Recently, the work the PPI/CRS committee did was cited by FEMA as a national best practice in CRS and hazard mitigation.
